Misconfigured Server Leaks AngelSense User Data

AngelSense Data Breach: Sensitive User Information Exposed Due to Unsecured Server

In a recent cybersecurity incident, New Jersey-based assistive technology company AngelSense faced scrutiny after a significant data breach exposed users’ personally identifiable information (PII) and precise location details. This alarming situation was reported by cybersecurity firm UpGuard, which discovered that an unsecured server had left sensitive user data vulnerable online. The incident underscores the critical importance of cybersecurity measures in protecting user information.

According to UpGuard’s findings, the exposed data included a range of sensitive details, such as names, phone numbers, postal addresses, email addresses, passwords, authentication tokens, credit card information, GPS coordinates, and associated health data. The internal database remained accessible online for over a week before being secured. This breach raises serious concerns about the handling of personal data by technology companies.

Key Details of the AngelSense Data Breach

  • Discovery Date: The exposed database was first identified on January 14 during a Shodan search.
  • Data Contents: Information compromised included:
    • Names and contact details
    • Passwords and authentication tokens
    • Credit card information
    • GPS coordinates and health information
  • Response Time: AngelSense secured the database only after being notified by UpGuard.

AngelSense’s Response

Doron Somer, CEO of AngelSense, emphasized that the company took immediate action to address the unsecured server situation. "We note that other than UpGuard, we have no information suggesting that any data on the logging system potentially was accessed. Nor do we have any evidence or indication that the data has been misused or is under threat of misuse," Somer stated in an official response.

Implications for Users

While the company asserts that there is no evidence of data misuse, the exposure of such sensitive information raises questions about the adequacy of security measures in place. Users are encouraged to remain vigilant and monitor their accounts for any unusual activity.
